Automatic Writing

Post by Dhawal on Tue Feb 14, 2012 6:12 pm

Everyone was posting about their interests so I thought I'll post about mine.

Automatic writing is writing from the subconscious, without consciously knowing what you have written. Basically it means 'writing without thinking'. What comes out is 100% pure nonsense, which I don't think anyone appreciates, but I appreciate it immensely. New words are created which don't mean anything, the sentences of course don't make any sense, and sometimes there is unintended humour.

I have two of my examples in my WP blog. The first one is in english, I mostly write in english. Second is a sentence in hindi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_writing
I didn't put this link because it has hardly any information, and even that info is unverified.

Other links contain new age mumbo-jumbo about spiritual mediums. Automatic writing comes from a person's own subconscious, not from spirits or aliens.

Like what kind of info? What I know about it I can tell you.

I used to do it before I even knew what it was called. I didn't know that other people also did it. I heard it for the first time in an english literature class, when a professor was discussing surrealistic writing techniques. I was like wow, even great poets used to do that, I'm in elite company Smile. It was used by them as finished works, or as raw material for creating another work. But it was always stream-of-consciousness or surrealistic in nature.

Then over the years I did it less and less often, and after self-diagnosis, almost stopped completely. But because of my fondness for pure nonsense, I still do it sometimes. It's like taking all the junk in your head out in one go. It's like talking gibberish, or scribbling random things on a paper. It's a good cure for extreme overload, but it leaves kind of a hangover where your mind is floating, and it's difficult to get back to the ground.

Recently, the paranormal and UFO freaks have taken over the whole thing. Now if you search google, 9 out of 10 pages would be about spirits, ghosts, mediums, and skeptics trying to discredit them. The initial joy of the thing is gone. I hope that some day the dignity of pure nonsense will be returned to it.

Just try to do it, you'll understand. Try to write without thinking. You'll be surprised what kind of things are there in your head.

Sometimes when we think that we have forgotten something unpleasant, it's just that we have forced it back into our subconsciuos, it's not gone completely. Automatic writing helps to remove that junk permanently. It has helped me atleast. Maybe others can give it a go.
